Ultimate Boarder Internship Art

Last summer I interned with the board-sport triathlon company Ultimate Boarder.  Tim Hoover, Founder and CEO of this week long board sport triathlon competition needed some graphic, design, and assistant help so I was honored to be chosen as his intern for the summer.  While being there, not only did I learn a TON about how an event based business is run and the ins and outs of the competitive board-sporting world, but I also got to do a ton of photo editing, created the sponsorship deck, and amongst other things, wallpaper designs and a new business card!  Because it was all for a business I can't publish most of the things I created due to copyrights, but check out my work on his website (the photos and wallpapers!):

Here is a sample of some of the other stuff I did!

THEY SOLD!!

My Self-Portrait pieces below that were shown in the Westmont Museum of Art - SOLD!!!!  A Trustee of my school came through in the last week it was shown, he and his wife fell in love with them and bought them on the spot!  I couldn't be more excited to be an official published artist who has been displayed in multiple locations including an art MUSEUM and sold my pieces that were displayed in that museum!
And... I graduated!  It's been a good few weeks!!!

Aaron

This piece got published in my school art magazine, The Phoenix Spring 2011.  It's one of my favorite digital paintings I have done.  Created in Corel Painter with a combination of oil paints.

Senior Show is Finally Here!

The show went up April 7th and is up until this Saturday May 7th (graduation).  I framed them each in a black wood frame with just over 3" of white matting around them.  They were hung next to each other.  My artist statement is below:

SELF-PORTRAIT                                                                   JACQUELYN PURVIS
The self-portrait:  a visual expression of the self.  But where is ones-self if not caught between the moment of past and future?  The present is a fleeting moment; it is never a known until after it passes.  It is out of one’s comfort zone to be in the balance between letting go of the safety of the past and being pushed towards the unknown of the future.
For this particular body of work, I explore and express the depth and process of finding the balance of self in the present.  I delve into understanding the mystery and power that color holds over emotion.  Through my transitions of warm-to-cool colors delineating a shift from past to future, I simultaneously embrace the challenge of a self-portrait
Digital Painting is my medium of choice because of its ability to transform a traditional painting medium and expand it one step further.  By applying graphic elements of color, shape, and texture in unexpected and new ways, life is given to what could otherwise be an ordinary, conventional painting.  This graphic process brings a desired mystery to the portrait: there is something real, yet altered, that I hope strikes interest in the viewer to explore my concept further.

Stanford Solar Car

A friend of mine is on the Stanford Solar Car team and apparently they have a good shot at winning this year.  They needed some graphic help in coming up with a way to paint the car.  They didn't actually end up using either of these designs, but they based their decision off of the top one!  Kinda cool!  Google Solar Car Tournament in Australia, it's a crazy event!

Exit Through the Gift Shop

GO SEE IT!  great documentary on street art today!

I really enjoyed this movie!  Prior to this I didn't know much about graffiti art or street art, but I had always wondered how people got into it and did it.  This movie also comments on how people can become famous and "big" in the art world today, which was very interesting.  I don't want to spoil it for anyone who hasn't seen it yet, but it is a great movie.  Between Banksy and Brainwash, my eyes have been opened to a new side of the art world.

(you can watch it for free if you have a Netflix account!)

Chuck Close

Just to contrast Android, Chuck Close has also been my favorite artist for years now.  He is probably the reason i'm into portraiture at all, though I can't ever compare myself to him, I would love to be as good as he is one day!

Andrew "Android" Jones

My new favorite artist ever is Andorid Jones.  Sadly I can't find a ton of information about him, but he is awesome and you should all check him out.  He takes digital painting to a new level.  His looks is almost street art mixed with fantasy, but combined with portraiture and landscapes.  The way he displayed his show looked awesome too.  By using light boxes it really allowed the intensity of the graphic colors to pop and some pieces he applied right the wall which looked really modern and great.  For a digital artist trying to go gallery he is an awesome inspiration!
